Ben Wharton becomes Radcliffe's 3rd all time scorer in a dominant win at Kendal

By Adam Harrison

Radcliffe FC ran out 4-0 winners against a strong Kendal Town side as history was made on the pitch.

Ben Wharton netted a Hat-trick as he reached third in the all-time scoring charts surpassing Tony Carroll and Steve Foster in the process. Scott Metcalfe added the third with a stunning effort into the top right hand corner of Joao Mendes goal.

The Boro still sit second but are now just one point behind Atherton Collieries after their game was postponed.
Jon Macken’s side started the brighter of the two, earning two corners which resulted into Kingsley Williams very nearly finding the back of the net.

On four minutes Scott Metcalfe danced his way into the Kendal box and was brought down to earn his side a penalty. Ben Wharton calmly slotted home from the spot to give the Boro the lead.

Shortly after Matt Crothers struck from long range but his effort curled into the arms on Mendes.
The Boro’s lead was doubled in spectacular fashion by Scott Metcalfe. His effort sailed into the top corner, leaving Mendes stranded.
Jon Macken’s side created a lot of chances during the first period but they held out to hold a first half lead.

Macken’s men came out in the second half in search of goals. Tunde Owolabi entered the field for Captain Kingsley Williams and caused the home side plenty of problems.
The lead was then three when Wharton rounded the Goalkeeper to slot home from close range. Great play from Metcalfe who slotted him into a great position.

Just minutes later Wharton had his Hat-trick, moving him up to third in the all-time scoring charts. Owolabi slotted him in after some great work on the wing to tap home from close range.

The Boro grabbed all three points after a very dominant display at the ST&B Accountants Stadium. Macken’s side have now closed the gap on leaders Atherton Collieries who have a very tough test on Monday against Leek Town. Next game for Radcliffe is Colne away on Saturday.

Interviews with Jon Macken and Ben Wharton are now available on our YouTube channel.

Macken spoke to RadcliffeTV: "It’s a good three points tough place to come with the weather and the pitch isn’t the greatest, a difficult side and we got the three points and im pleased with that.
We’ve been working all week on our attacking phases, counter attacking and we created a lot of opportunities today and on another day we put them away. Ben got a hat-trick, Tunde when he came on created chances, he could have got 2 or 3 himself im pleased with the performance, the victory and I think we will get better and it’s a pleasing three points."

And while your here, have you voted for Tunde Owolabi yet? He's up for NPL Supporters player of the season. Vote now for Tunde!
